Unarmed truck driver attacked by police dog after surrendering to officers in Ohio

Police in Ohio have launched an investigation after a 23-year-old truck driver was attacked by a police dog after surrendering to officers with his hands up.

Driver Jadarrius Rose was pursued by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on 4 July after failing to stop his truck that was “missing a left rear mud flap”, according to an incident report.

The Circleville Police Department, including a police dog, were called to assist after Rose initially refused to get out of the vehicle.

Video footage provided by the highway patrol shows Rose standing in front of the truck with his hands raised.

Moments later, the officer unleashes the police dog, despite calls from another officer telling him: “Do not release the dog.”

Bodycam footage shows the dog running towards Rose, with the canine appearing to bite and pull him over.

Rose can be heard screaming, “please get it off”. He was later treated in hospital for dog bites and charged with failure to comply.

The dog-handler was identified as officer Ryan Speakman by the highway patrol incident report.

A statement from Circleville Police does not confirm the identity of the officer or reveal whether they will face any disciplinary action.

Recordings of a 911 call made by a man believed to be Rose were released by the Ross County Sheriff’s office on Monday.

They show a man tell dispatchers that officers were “trying to kill” him and that he didn’t feel safe pulling his vehicle over.

“Right now I’m being chased by like 20 police officers and they all got their guns pointed directly to my truck,” Rose said during a two-minute call, according to NBC.

The dispatcher repeatedly told Rose he should stop and comply with police, and also told him the officers were not trying to harm him.

It is not clear why Rose did not immediately stop the vehicle.
